Kapaun Mt. Carmel Catholic High School Athletic Director John Heise announced today that KMC senior Matthew Washburn will sign a National Letter of Intent to attend Division I Saint Louis University next fall. Matt will run cross country and track for SLU. The signing ceremony will take place on Friday, June 29 in the KMC Round (just inside the main entrance).
Washburn is a four-year letterman in both Track and Cross Country. In cross country, he served as team captain, is a two-time winner of the Gatorade Will to Win Award and a four-year recipient of the Academic Excellence Award for holding the highest GPA on the team. Matt is a two-time All-City selection. His senior year he was a medalist in all meets, including the Rim Rock Meet in Lawrence, Kansas. His senior year he was named All-Region and the third place team at State competition.
In track, as a senior, Washburn was a medalist in all meets, including the KU Relays as the lead-off runner in the Distance Medley Relay. He was named All-City and All-Region in the 1600 meter and 800 meter runs, and was a state qualifier in the 1600 meter, 800 meter and 4 x 800 meter relay. He was named All-State placing fifth in the 1600 meter run and fourth as the lead-off runner in the 4 X 800 meter relay.
Additional post-season honors include being named All-State sophomore and junior years, All-Region freshman and sophomore years, and All-City all four years.
Matt is a 2007 Cum Laude graduate of KMC, was a member of the National Honor Society and a recipient of the Msgr. Arthur Barth Catholic High School Scholars Award.
Saint Louis University has awarded Matt their Dean’s Scholarship for academic merit and an Athletic Scholarship to run Track and Cross Country for the Billikens. He has been accepted into the SLU Pre-Law Program.
